I got a Trek bike from my LBS with V-brakes for my 35kg kid. The cable guide would pop out in light crashes and eventually the flimsy metal it plugged into bent. I can't believe people trust their kids' lives to these things.

V-brakes

The braking system itself does not seem to be the problem from what you mention. It is more a bike assembly and reliability issue to me than anything else.

I would advice to go see your local bike store and have them take a look at this.

V-brakes are very strong and reliable in general. People should not be worried buying bikes that use this type of braking system.
